A Silver Anniversary Gift from the Silver Screen

It’s 1939 and, while war threatens in Europe, in Hollywood the battle over who will play Scarlett O’Hara is over.  Filming of Gone with the Wind is in full gear when producer David O. Selznick (played by Skip Taft) secretly halts production to replace the director and rewrite the script.  He knows just who to have his long-suffering secretary (Diana Potter) call for the rewrites—Ben Hecht, the fastest typewriter in Los Angeles.  And to direct—Victor Fleming, a no-nonsense man’s man (played by Travis W. Hopkins) who’ll get the film finished.  But Hecht (portrayed by Steve Maheras) is the only person in America who hasn’t read the novel.   For five frantic and funny days behind the locked office door, producer and director act out the episodes for the reluctant screenwriter who’s far more concerned with the fate of Europe’s Jews than he is with what happens to Rhett and Scarlett.  It might be easier if they had more to survive on than bananas, peanuts, and determination.  Jackie Czerepinski directs the mayhem and ISU design student Kai Manzo is providing the set.

Moonlight and Magnolias contains some adult content and language.

Gifts from Friends for Our Lobby

To launch our Silver Anniversary season we’re featuring gifts in our lobby gallery.  Some are gifts of very special clothing from friends of Westside.  Some are gifts that were given to Board of Directors member Deborah Flair by artist James Pavelek.   A native Texan, “Pav” worked as a production artist for Film Score Monthly magazine in Los Angeles. Before his death in 2003, he produced  more than 1,000 works in a variety of media.  Many of them were celebrity sketches like the pastels of characters from Gone with the Wind you’ll see copies of in our lobby.   Join us at 6:00 p.m. on opening night for a glass of champagne to celebrate these gifts and to toast our 25 years of making marvelous theatre.
